ST-ONEMP digital controller of Italian French semiconductor simplifies the design of energy-efficient dual-port USB-PD adapter

    The ST-ONE series USB powered (USB-PD) digital controller with high integration and energy efficiency of ST-French Semiconductor adds a ST-ONEMP chip supporting dual charging ports.
    ST-ONEMP digital controller is based on the first ST-ONE architecture in the market and integrates Arm in one package ® Cortex ®- M0+microcontroller, high-efficient non-complementary active clamping flyback controller and USB-PD 3.1 interface. The current isolation between the primary and secondary circuits of ST-ONE architecture greatly simplifies the design and assembly of USB-PD power adapter.
    Now, by adding the power sharing support function, the latest ST-ONEMP simplifies the design of a double charging port with an output in addition to the USB-PD output, improving the charging flexibility and convenience of end users.
    In ST-ONEMP, Cortex-M0+MCU microcontroller is located at the secondary side of the charger, and 64KB flash memory is used to store customized USB-PD protocol and power conversion firmware. The microcontroller is pre-installed with USB-PD 3.1 PPS certified firmware, allowing developers to provide turnkey solutions for standard applications. The MCU controls the synchronous rectifier and flyback converter, and optimizes the microcontroller for the zero-voltage switch non-complementary active clamp topology, because at high power, the zero-voltage switch non-complementary active clamp energy efficiency is higher than the traditional quasi-resonant flyback converter topology.
    ST-ONEMP is used in conjunction with the MasterGaN power technology of Italian French Semiconductor. MasterGaN technology includes GaN broadband gap power transistor of integrated gate driver of Italian semiconductor. The switching frequency of Italian semiconductor GaN technology is higher than that of traditional silicon MOSFET, enabling the adapter to provide higher power density and high energy efficiency in line with the latest ecological design specifications.
    The reference design of EVLONEMP 65W+10W AC/DC adapter has been developed by ST-ONEMP and MASTERGAN4. The weight and volume of the adapter is equivalent to that of 20W single-port smart phone charger. The peak energy efficiency is 94%, 2% higher than that of similar traditional dual-port adapters, while the PCB area is only one quarter of that of traditional adapters. Therefore, OEMs can reduce the shell size, save energy, reduce the use of plastics, and provide more environmentally friendly products.
